Diabetics Complications: How are we managing?
Published: Tuesday, May 8, 2018 9:06:20 AM

An intellectual gathering of professionals from different spheres gathered to discuss the salient topic of diabetes, at the 24th staging of the University Diabetes Outreach Programme (UDOP).  This year’s discussion was rallied under the theme “Diabetes Complications: How are we managing?” and was hosted at the Jewels Runaway Bay Beach and Golf Resort recently.

Currently 14.5% of Jamaicans are living with the disease. In fact, Diabetes or the associated complications from the disease is listed as the second leading cause of death worldwide. As of 2018 there are approximately 220,000 Jamaicans currently living with the disease.

Sadly 220,000 Jamaicans are at great risk of 10 years being shaved from their life expectancy rate, as diabetes if left undetected and or untreated results in premature death.

Northern Caribbean University’s (NCU) sponsored lecture segment, zooned in on the impact of diabetes on oral health and was presented by Dr. Nikola Angelov.

Dr. Nikola Angelov, DDS, MS, PhD is a Professor and Chair at the Department of Periodontics and Dental Hygiene at the University of Texas Centre School of Dentistry at Houston University of Texas School of Dentistry.

Dr. Angelov focused primarily on periodontal disease and its effects on the diabetic patient. Periodontal Disease in its simplest form is defined as an inflammatory disease of the supporting tissues around the teeth and in its earliest stage is known most commonly as gingivitis.

Dr. Angelov alluded to the fact that Americans living with diabetes are 3 times more likely to develop periodontal disease. In fact, periodontal disease is listed as the 6th complication of diabetes.

The University Diabetes Outreach Programme is the Caribbean’s premier continuing medical education and healthcare networking event and this year’s programme stressed prevention and early detection.
