Northern Caribbean University, NCU, has pledged to establish a scholarship fund to facilitate the tertiary education for the daughter of slain Police Corporal, Melvin Smith.

She is 11 years old and presently attends Hampton High School in St Elizabeth.

Corporal Smith who was assigned to the Community Safety and Security Branch (CSSB) in Manchester was recently killed while accosting a robber.

NCU President, Dr Lincoln Edwards in making the commitment, said it was part of the university’s mission and Christian duty to provide assistance for those in need.

“Surely, a grieving family shouldn’t have to worry about the education of their child so we want to step in and set up this scholarship fund to relieve the family of the burden.”

Dr Edwards was speaking at the memorial service for Corporal Smith in the Mandeville Park on November 2.  He says the scholarship is also in line with the desires of Smith, who worked closely with NCU in providing training and supervision for practicum students.

“This is also in honour of Corporal Smith’s wish to create a secure future for his daughter; ensuring that she achieves a high quality education. We will ensure that that happens at NCU.” Edwards said.

For years NCU has been deeply involved in lending support to the Island’s security forces, specifically in central Jamaica, through police training and social intervention initiatives.

These include the Restorative Justice programme which started at the Mandeville Police station, the court and the Victim Support Unit as a catalyst for change and development in troubled communities.

So far NCU has trained over 3000 police officers as first responders and professional counselors.
