New NCU President Inaugurated - Challenges Administration To Expand Opportunities
Published: Monday, June 26, 2017 10:56:14 AM

The recent inauguration of the 24th president of Northern Caribbean University (NCU), Dr Lincoln Edwards, was more than a flamboyant ceremony, it was also a time for deep introspection and an announcement of the plans for continued progression.

"Today is a day to look to the future to transcend the ordinary, it is a time to reflect on what a Seventh-day Adventist institution such as Northern Caribbean University means and has to offer in this 21st century," Edwards said.

He announced that NCU has a key role to play in reshaping the minds of those who have otherwise been influenced.

"In a world that is becoming increasingly impersonal and violent, NCU and its emphasis on character building is needed now more than ever. This new administration is sending the message in clear tones that we are working to expand opportunities here on campus."

A reopening of the bakery, a partnership that will see to the establishment of a business process outsourcing centre on campus; the purchase of 500 acres of land in Goshen, St Elizabeth, to provide opportunities for students to engage in agricultural production; and the establishment of an information technology park are among the immediate plans of the university Edwards is spearheading.

"It is not easy to convince a nation or world to respect, much less support, an institution such as NCU that is committed to challenging some of society's practices. But it is our obligation to explain our purposes and achieve them so well that this institution will remain relevant and prosper in this century."

Having left the University of Texas where he was employed in the School of Dentistry, Edwards succeeds Dr Trevor Gardner and offers a wealth of experience in administrative governance, research and policy implementation, among other key areas.

Among those in attendance at the inauguration ceremony were members of the international and local Adventist Unions, members of the Ministry of Education, the University Council of Jamaica, and key parish stakeholders.
