I have only three subjects but I want to become an accountant

Dear Career Advisor:

I am 22 years of age and currently not attending school. I have only three Caribbean Secondary Education Certificate (CSEC) subjects but my dream is to become an accountant. Can you give me some advice on the steps to take?

Yours truly,

Dear Tiffany:

Let us take another approach to your situation and instead say you ALREADY have three CSEC subjects. You will now need to devise strategies to help you gain the additional subjects needed for matriculation into your desired programme of study.

Typically, for entry into an accounting degree programme at our local universities, you are required to have a minimum of five CSEC subjects at grades l-lll, which must include mathematics and English language. It is expected that among the remaining three subjects at least one is accounting or some other business subject like principles of business or economics.

Additionally, some institutions may admit a limited number of people using the mature entry track. The option for mature entry is sometimes possible if you are over 21 years of age and have five or more years of relevant work experience, typically at the supervisory level.

I would strongly recommend though, that you meet with a career counsellor who will be able to give you guidance specific to your circumstances. You can receive this service free of charge by making contact with the employment or career services officer at any branch of the HEART Trust/ NTA islandwide.

All the best.
