NCU wins 'Girls in ICT Day Caribbean Hackathon 2017'

Northern Caribbean University, continues its winning streak with the latest victory in the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) sector.

A five-member female team copped the top prize in the, Girls in ICT Day Caribbean Hackathon, which took place simultaneously, in Jamaica, Barbados and Trinidad and Tobago.  The event took place on April 27.

 The competition allows, girls and young women to engage in hands-on activities, guided by a tech mentor, using ICT to create, innovate and generate solutions to various challenges. The activities include mobile app building, animation, robotics, digital video production and digital art works, and web development.

 Damion Mitchell, Computer and Information Sciences Department Chair at NCU, said this was the team’s first time participating in this event. “They went there with a little bit of apprehension but they demonstrated the skills that they were taught here (NCU) and were able to apply them under pressure.”

Team NCU beat out six other universities and colleges in Jamaica to win the first place position.

“They participated in a hackathon designed to create dynamic environment where the ladies could engage in hands-on activities using ICT to create, innovate and generate solutions and the area of focus was in mobile apps development.” Mr Mitchell added.

The international telecommunications union, Girls in ITC day is a worldwide event which seeks to create a global event that encourages education and empowers girls and young women to really pursue studies and careers in the ICT sector.
