Indeed, 50 years ago the Honourable Norman Manley, Q.C., Premier of Jamaica, was guest speaker at the opening of the residence hall of the then West Indies College. The women’s residence hall was officially declared open by Dr. Hugh Springer, Registrar of the University College of the West Indies (UCWI), now University of the West Indies (UWI). Leif Kr. Tobiassen PhD. then President of West Indies College (now NCU) had noted that the official opening of Jamaica Hall, the new women’s residence, was one of the outstanding milestones of progress that occurred in 1960.
