A decade into the 21st century, Northern Caribbean University (NCU) ushers a multi-disciplinary group of gifted individuals along their journey to graduation. The 2010 Graduating Class Presentation, under the theme “Triumph over trials; empowered to serve,” unveiled representatives of the over 700 graduands to a jubilant NCU family. The Graduating Class Presentation, held on March 11, marks the beginning of the graduation exercise for graduands from all four NCU campuses island wide.

On Saturday, March 6, 2010, Northern Caribbean University (NCU), at their weekly church service, presented Dr. Jean Josué Pierre, president of the Université Adventiste D’Haïti, with a gift of US$10,000.00 from the university community. The cheque was presented to Dr. Pierre by Dr. Herbert Thompson, president of NCU who shared that this was the first tranche of a gift from the education department of the Inter-American Division (IAD) for their goal of giving to the Education department of the Haitian Union one million United States dollars (US$1,000,000.00).

Northern Caribbean University (NCU) hosted the 2nd Summit for University presidents and Vice-presidents of the Inter-American Division (IAD) Department of Education, at the Jamaica Pegasus hotel in Kingston, March 3-7. Representatives from universities throughout the division namely: Colombia, Dominica Republic, Haiti, Mexico, Puerto Rico, Trinidad and Tobago, and Venezuela were present.

During the Inter-American Division’s (IAD’s) 2nd Summit of presidents and vice-presidents held in Kingston Jamaica, the IAD’s education department promised the Haitian Union of Seventh-day Adventists a gift of two hundred and fifty thousand US dollars (US$250,000.00). This gift, according to Dr. Moisés Velázquez, education director, is to help in the redevelopment of the education sector of the union in Haiti.

Northern Caribbean University (NCU) and West Indies Union Conference of Seventh-day Adventists (WIU) hosted the 2nd Summit for University presidents and Vice-presidents of the Inter-American Division (IAD) Department of Education at the Jamaica Pegasus hotel in Kingston from March 3-7. Host president, Dr. Herbert Thompson in welcoming members of the universities from Colombia , Dominica Republic , Haiti , Mexico , Puerto Rico , Trinidad and Tobago , and Venezuela expressed delight in hosting the 2nd such summit to be held in the IAD.

Seemingly unperturbed by the scorching heat of the sun, the students of Northern Caribbean University (NCU), with their backpacks and books in hand, moved to the melodious beat of the drums, sang along with student performers paying tribute to the history and struggles of the Black race. T.O.K, Louis Bennett, Etana and Bob Marley are among a plethora of artists whose works were celebrated under the clock in the parking lot of the university recently.

Sensational, refreshing, heart stopping messages, enlightening, exfoliating the soul, it rocks, were some of the words and phrases used to describe this semester’s spring week of prayer. Spring Week of Prayer 2010 was more than a refreshing shower from the Holy Spirit; It was much more than a hearty slice of the spiritual pie of the university life, it was more than a fresh breath of air descending from heaven on the stifled population; it was all that and more; it was a seminar on grace at the foot of Jesus where each sermon from God--sent through an imperfect being --was filled with messages for the Christian race; each story brought novel insights into the magnitude of love the Father has for his children.

The Northern Caribbean University (NCU) Campus Ministries department under the auspices of their director Dr. Robert Wright have, for many years, offered quality care and support to the residents of the parish and those who are less privileged. This department at NCU has played its role in offering care and support to children and adults alike.
The Office of Campus Ministries at NCU recently conducted an outreach programme at the Mandeville Infirmary. Twenty four (24) students, along with the Director, Dr. Robert Wright, participated in the activities of the day. The female residents had their hair washed and plaited; they were given manicures and pedicures while the men had their hair groomed and facial hair shorn. Students also prayed for residents to whom they ministered.

A little over ten years ago, a team of scientists from Northern Caribbean University (NCU) namely Dr. Julieth Bailey-Penrod, Mrs. Patrice Williams-Gordon, and Dr. Paul Gyles began a research on the use of garlic and the local sorrel to treat cancer. This has led to collaboration between Grace Kennedy Foods Company and NCU.
The research team, initially had everybody in one locale, but today all three are sharing their separate talents throughout the world. Dr. Bailey-Penrod, now a faculty at Oakwood University, Mrs. Williams-Gordon is now teaching in the Bahamas, and Dr. Paul Gyles, Dean of the College of Natural and Applied Sciences at NCU recently met with the team from Grace Kennedy and CGR Communications in what was named the Sorrel Big Bang Tour. After meeting at Grace Kennedy’s head office on Harbour Street, Kingston, the group wended its way to Clarendon where they met with sorrel farmers. The expedition returned to Kingston to tour the Grace Kennedy Canning department, and then the group was feted at the Spanish Court Hotel in New Kingston.

Northern Caribbean University (NCU) United Student Movement (USM) held its annual sports day 2010 at the NCU sports oval on February 16. The house named after the first black NCU president Dr. Sydney O. Beaumont reigned supreme, in the staged event, titled, Rumble in the Jungle.
